Canadian WWI Veteran's Passing

Canadian WWI Veteran's Passing

(AP) December 1, 2005-
Clarence Laking, the last Canadian living who saw action in World War I, died Saturday in Toronto. He was 106.

In 1917, when he was 18 and against his minister father's wishes, Laking enlisted in the army in Guelph, Ontario. He served two years in France as a signaler, stringing wire for field telephones along the trenches. Near the end of the war, Laking was hit by shrapnel. He was in a first-aid station when the war ended.

Laking's death leaves four Canadians alive who served in the 1914-1918 conflict.
