German World War I Veteran's Passing

German World War I Veteran's Passing

Hermann Doernemann, Germany's oldest man, died March 2, 2005 in Dusseldorf, his family said. He was 111.
Doernemann, who was born in 1893 in the western city of Essen, suffered a gunshot wound while serving in World War I and was excused from military service in World War II. He worked as an electrical engineer for utility company RWE AG for 42 years.
Doernemann had been living with his daughter and son-in-law since his wife's death in 1984.
The youngest of seven children, Doernemann outlived all his siblings and his son, who died in 2002 at age 73. He is survived by his daughter, a grandson, and two great-grandsons.
