My Second Daughter

My Second Daughter

I decided that I'm going to do an entry for each of my children on their birthday. I missed my middle daughter's 13th birthday, which was on January 18th, so I am going to do her page now.

She was the surprise package that I didn't get to see until she was around 8 months old. She's the daughter I had with an old college girlfriend. The last time I had saw her mother, she was on her period so naturally I was suspicious of her claims of me being the father when she just showed up out of the blue one day with her. I didn't even recognize my old girlfriend when she came up to me. I took a paternity test which showed that the baby and me shared biological markers, and that I was 99.9% the true father. This was okay with me because I had grown so attached to my little girl. I still couldn't stand the mother, but I tried to work it out with her for our daughter's sake. It lasted for nearly two weeks. Even to this day, her mother still wants to get back with me.

My daughter's mother was Cheyenne/Arapaho. So my daughter has the blood of four tribes in her, Cheyenne and Arapaho from her mother, and Creek and Osage from me. She has gone through a Cheyenne naming ceremony, however I don't remember what her Indian name is. She attends an Indian school in western Oklahoma. She comes to visit me several times during the year, and one time she lived with me for a full year.

She dances in pow wows. When she was 4 she won 5th Place in the Tiny Tots dance division at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuequerque, New Mexico. The Gathering is the largest pow wow in North American so I was very proud of her. She dances Southern Cloth, Straight, Fancy Shawl, and Jingle Dress which are all Plains Indian dances. She doesn't know any Creek dances, yet. She is really good, but she is so shy that she won't let me video tape her dancing at home.

She looks the most like me. She is tall like me and thin like her mother. She runs track and plays basketball for her school. In the summer she plays softball in the various All Indian Tournaments around the state.

I am very proud of her and I love her very much. She is very quiet and kind hearted. She has a sense of humor which she seems to show by accident from time to time. She is very shy. On her last visit at Christmas, I learned that she is finally taking a liking to boys. She is a very beautiful girl, so I'm sure there will be a lot of boys after her. I hope she doesn't get her little heart broken too often, and I hope no one tries to take advantage of her because she is so trusting.

She is descended from survivors of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864.

Soundtrack for this entry-the Southern Cheyenne women's song "Kitten Lullaby" by MARY LOU STONE ROAD PRAIRIE CHIEF.
